I was always an avid reader. This was encouraged, and even after my parents divorced and my mom did not have a lot of money, she would buy me books. She allowed me to read what I wanted and did not encourage me to challenge myself, so I mostly read smut, but reading is reading. My mom was not very involved in my schooling- she received her nursing training in a vocational program right after high school and she had a career at 19. She is proud of my education, but doesn't understand it.
My family did not intervene in my academics and I believe it was to my detriment. My life outside of school was focused on my social life and sports when I was in high school. I knew that I would go to college, but was not the interested in where or what I studied.
Interestingly, I dated a guy in high school whose family was very highly educated and very academically focused. When we were dating, my grades were the highest. I studied and doubled up on math my sophomore year so that I would be on track to take calculus as a senior. I read books that his mom suggested and worked hard to be organized and productive. When we broke up, my grades slide. His dad hugged me at my high school graduation and told me that he was proud of me- it is what I remember most from my graduation day.
